Computer Programmer's Day or ENIAC Day

2/14/2022

February 15 is Computer Programmer's Day. This professional holiday is celebrated annually in honor of the creation of the first universal electronic digital computer, ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). It occupied an area of 167 sq.m, weighed 30 tons, and consumed 150 kW of electricity. The development cost was nearly half a million dollars.

Did you know that at the origins of the first computer there were six women programmers who created programs for ballistic calculations?! Indeed, although at first everyone thought they were just models for the 1946 presentation or there just to make the photos look better. The initial development team of ENIAC included — Jean Jennings Bartik, Frances Bilas Spence, Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum, Kathleen McNulty Mauchly Antonelli, Betty Snyder Holberton, and Marlyn Wescoff.

The computer's architecture was developed in 1943 by John Presper Eckert, John William Mauchly, and John von Neumann from the University of Pennsylvania.

The first ENIAC programmers received public recognition for their achievements only decades later. It was not until 1997 that they were inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame.

The team of LLC 'Ukrainian Geoinformation Systems' sincerely congratulates all computer system developers, programmers, operators of various computer devices, automated control systems engineers, database administrators, server administrators, and many others whose skills and knowledge are indispensable in today’s world!
